The Nominated Neighbour Scheme
The Nominated Neighbour scheme has been developed by the Havering Community Safety Partnership to reduce the risks of older and vulnerable residents in Havering becoming victims of distraction burglary and bogus callers. The scheme encourages residents not to engage in conversation with unexpected callers to their home and direct them to their ‘nominated neighbour’ who will verify the person’s identity and return with them whilst they carry out their business.
Offenders often target the homes of elderly people and attempt to enter their homes by tricking or confusing the person as to their identity and the purpose of their visit. Often they create a sense of urgency to create a feeling of panic, increasing the chances of access.
Once inside the door, they have an easier opportunity to commit burglary. Bogus callers are not always obvious.
