Havering's 12 Safety Messages

12 security tips from Havering

At home:

1. Lock your front and back doors properly at all times, even when you’re at home.

2. Light up your home - a house in darkness after 4pm during winter is at a higher risk of being burgled. Why not use a timer switch?

3. Don’t leave wrapped presents in view from windows.

4. Don’t leave expensive presents, alcohol or food in sheds or garages.

5. Check and set your house alarm properly.

6. Dispose of packaging and wrapping carefully - don’t advertise your new goods.

7. Make a note of the frame numbers of new bicycles and any serial numbers of new electrical equipment for future reference.

8. Use a UV pen to mark items with your post code and door number.

Out and about:

9. Don’t leave gifts and shopping unattended in your car. If you must - make sure it’s locked.

10. Beware of pickpockets. Consider using a purse chain.

11. Shop with a friend - it can be more fun and is safer.

12. Avoid walking home alone late at night, and make sure someone knows where you are.

To highlight some of the ways in which this can be done very easily, we held Community Safety Roadshows across Havering in December 2008.
