Domestic Violence - is it happening to you?

Domestic Violence and emotional abuse are behaviours used by one person in a relationship to control the other. Partners may be married or not married, heterosexual, same sex relationships, living together, separated, dating or between other family members.

Examples of abuse include

  • name calling or put downs
  • preventing a partner from contacting family or friends
  • withholding money
  • stopping a partner from getting a job
  • actual or threatened physical harm
  • sexual assault
  • stalking
  • intimidation

Anyone can be a victim

Victims can be of any age, sex, race, culture, religion, education or marital status. Approximately 90 per cent of children are in the same or next room to where domestic violence incidents occur.

If you are being abused, remember

  • You are not alone
  • It is not your fault
  • Help is available
